Meryl Streep Gives Anti-Trump Speech at the Golden Globes... and Restores Some Of My Faith In Society
January 9, 2017
It's a commonly known fact that Meryl Streep is a Hollywood goddess, so it was not surprising at all when she won the Cecil DeMille Award at the Golden Globes. But, what was even better than her winning that well-deserved award was the opportunity she took from it.
All that she was really required to do was say "Thank you," make some cheesy, heartfelt speech, and walk off of the stage. But, instead, she seized the opportunity to talk about something much more relevant to talk about something much more relevant: the fact that the soon-to-be president is the same person who made fun of a disabled reporter and threatened countless immigrants with deportation.
She gently reminded Donald Trump's nationalist a**, using Hollywood as an example, that everyone in the United States (except the few Native Americans living today) came from somewhere else. And her call-to-action for all of us was to be empathetic, and to help protect the jobs of journalists, so that the truth can be continue to be protected and shared with the masses.
And she did it all without mentioning his name once. What a class act!
It feels incredibly refreshing to know that one of the most successful, influential celebrities in the world, felt exactly the way I did the night that Donald Trump won the election. I lost all faith in America post-election, and she just helped to restore some of it. And, what's even better about her being so woke, is that she is in a position of privilege and doesn't necessarily have to be.
We might have a bigot as the soon-to-be president, but we also have people like Meryl Streep, who are willing to speak out against him. Let's take comfort in that, so we can stand together and fight.
