"...She is literally swinging her hips around. That's it. She is not twerking, or grinding on anyone. She's not even wearing anything inappropriate."
For those of you who don't already know, the media is blasting Malia Obama left and right, trying to portray her as this classless, ratchet teenage girl. As 'evidence,' they are circulating this video clip where she is at some concert, dancing with her friends in a way that they felt was risqué.
However, if you go and actually watch the video, you'll see that there is nothing scandalous about the way Malia is acting. In the video, she is literally swinging her hips around. That's it. She is not twerking, or grinding on anyone. She's not even wearing anything inappropriate.
People, Malia Obama is 18.
For god's sakes, she's fresh out of high school! Yes, she's the president's daughter, but she's still a teenager. And, teenagers dance at concerts. Shocking, I know.
Now, I'm definitely going out on a limb here, but I'm willing to bet that half of the people talking all this garbage about Malia did far worse at 18. And, in case you are unaware, or need a memory refresher, some of the White House teenagers who preceded her certainly have.
During George W. Bush's presidency, his niece, Noelle Bush, was arrested many times for drug charges. His 19 year-old twin daughters were also caught and charged for underage drinking. Back when Sarah Palin was running for vice president alongside John McCain in the 2008 election, her daughter, Bristol Palin, got pregnant at only 17. I wonder if people were giving them as much grief, especially since their actions were a lot more scandalous.
I'm going to go ahead and say what no one wants us to say - her race is a factor in how much criticism she's receiving from the media. From day one, the media has had society convinced that black women and girls are uncouth, loud and ghetto. Because of these stereotypes, black women have to work ten times harder than other races, especially white women, to even be seen as remotely equal. Even when their daddies are the president of the United States.
Need more proof? Just look at how the media has treated Michelle Obama, from newspaper cartoons depicting her as angry, burly, and hyper-masculinized, to off-the-cuff comments about her 'inappropriate clothing choices' (I didn't know that shoulders under a sleeveless dress were so highly sexualized). I swear, despite keeping it clean and classy, the Obamas just can't catch a break... even as they are on their way out!
I understand that when you are in the public eye, you should conduct yourself in an appropriate way, and actually give the paparazzi anything to talk about. But, why should that mean that you shouldn't live, and that you should act in a way that is unnatural? Malia Obama is getting all this flack for... being a teenager!? Cut it out, folks.
